Choosing Your First Tarot Deck

For a beginner Tarot reader, choosing your first deck can be a frustrating task. There are hundreds of different Tarot decks available. You will find decks based on books, legends, mythology, and even movies. You will also find a variety of sizes and stock quality.

The traditional Tarot deck is made up of 78 cards. You will find other alternatives, but if you plan to learn the meanings from books and online information it is best to pick a traditional deck.

There’s a wealth of information on the Tarot online and you can also find free courses.

When picking your cards, you should consider the following.

Size does matter. Decks come in many sizes ranging from normal (slightly smaller the 3X5), oversized and smaller than normal. The size you choose will depend on what feels the most comfortable to you.

Stock quality is an issue. There are a few cheaply made decks on the market. When picking your deck, check review to see what others say. Check your local stores, where you may be able to handle the cards before purchase.

Images are the main concern. When picking your deck, choose a theme that feels comfortable to you and inspires you. The less complicated the image the easier it will be for you, as a new reader, to connect with the basic meanings of the tarot cards.

You will also find that most topics and lessons on the Tarot will refer back to the Rider-Waite deck, or those based on this deck. This is something to consider when purchasing your first deck.
